Integrating Connect

I'm new to Workplace and finding it difficult to see how Connect integrates with Mail/Cliq/Streams. For instance, I can see the Company Connect calendar in Mail, but I can't add to it. So it's not very convenient. If I attach files to a Cliq message, do they go to Connect? What's the relationship between Streams and Connect Groups? The workflow I envision requires these two "halves" to  work seamlessly together, but whatever I try, I usually end up with a Connect world and a separate world centered around the Email interface.
