Integration of Docs and Writer
I am using Zoho Docs and Writer. Unfortunately, these two solutions seem not yet to be very good aligned / implemented and working with both applications is at least for me very confusing:
If I upload Word (or other doc format) documents from my computer, they appear in Docs with exactly the same symbol as docs that have been created in Writer. However, they seem to act differently:
- They do not appear in the Writer "My Documents" list
- If you right click in Docs on a Word Doc, three additional menu points appear (import to writer, check-in/check-out, revisions) compared to a right click on Writer Docs.
- If you edit a Word Doc (without chosing import to writer), a different version of writer opens with only limited edit possiblities (e.g. there is no save as function, no status bar showing page, version, author, etc., one can not add tags, no mailings & share menu, etc.)
- Only writer docs (i.e. docs created in writer or Word docs uplaoded and then transformed to writer docs using the "import to Writer" function) are showing up in the My Documents list of Writer
- The only way to sort Writer docs in the Writer view seems to be adding tags to such documents. Unfortunately, this seems to work completely indifferently from Tags in Docs, i.e. Docs can not recognize tags added in Writer and the other way around.
- It is great that one can use folders and a folder hierarchy to store docs in Zoho Docs. Unfortunately, Writer seems not to be able to recognize such order / hierarchy. All Writer Docs are simply shown in the "My Documents" list, irrespective where they are stored in Zoho Docs. There seems to be no way to find out in which folder a document is stored on Docs that is shown in the Writer My Documents list. This is especially cumbersome if one has two documents with the same name in different folders...
Questions:
- Is there a document / post / FAQ section that explains this different handling of Writer / other Doc formats files and how the users of Docs and Writer shall best proceed to understand this and to avoid being completely confused?
- How can I see in the Docs view whether a document is a Writer document or not?
- How can I see in the Writer "My Documents" view where in Docs the document is stored (which sub-folder)
- Is it possible to use and show the same tags in Writer and Docs, i.e. if add a Tag to a Writer Doc in Docs, Writer adds automatically a respective Tag Folder and the Doc is listed under the respective Folder in the Writer "Tag Folders" list?
As I fear that there are no simple answers to most of above questions, I take the liberty to suggest the following improvements for the next version of Writer and Docs:
- Additional section in FAQs explaining the difference between Writer Docs and Docs in other formats
- Different symbols in Docs for Writer Docs and other format Docs
- Same Tags and Tag Folders in Writer and Docs
- Replication of the Docs Folder Structure in Writer so that one can see in which folder a document under My Documents is stored (or at least adding this info to the properties)
Thank you for considering these points and providing a feedback.
Best regards
Gian-Reto
