Specifications really should pivot at the product level... not the product group level
Hello,
So I never tried adding specifications to my products until today, only to find that they're really unusable for product groups, which is probably precisely where they'd serve to benefit the most.
The very nature of a product group is such that certain specifications of the products are changing between one product to the next. Naturally the most significant varying characteristics are those that are defined by the attribute names and options themselves. But other characteristics typically change between variants, and would naturally be those that you'd likely want to have displayed among the product's specifications tab.
One of the main points of the specifications is for comparing and contrasting between similar items in order to allow a customer to drill into the details and better understand the differences between the alternatives in order to make a better buying decision.
It also seems that the next logical progression would be to use the data contained with the specifications be able to compare and contrast similar products (usually within the same category or product group), by arranging the data from two or three products selected by the customer into either columns or rows, thereby allowing them the ability to compare and contrast between them. This capability is found on lots of sites like Walmart and Target. It would be nice to see this in Commerce as well.
And on a related note... Am I correct in that that these don't export or import with the rest of the product data? Can they?
