Word Plugin Problems

Word Plugin Problems

Hi,

I tried out the MS Office plugin today, but I encountered a couple of things that could either be called bugs or feature requests - limitations due to the way I wanted the plugin to work. However, since one did cause me to lose work (previous versions), it would be worthwhile to warn users of the danger in advance.

First, I was using MS Word's ability to save multiple versions of a document. Once I used the plugin to save/sync the .doc file to Zoho Office, however, I lost all previous versions in Word. Since this was the first version that I had synced to Zoho, the previous versions were never online.

I tested to see if more revisions would also be lost to Word, and they were. They did show up in Zoho Office, but I would rather have them stored in the .doc file for use in Word itself. Since I'm not likely to edit the documents online very often, I suppose I should just content myself with an online backup of the .doc file instead.

The second issue was with multiple computers using the same file. I synced a .doc file to Zoho Writer on my laptop, then copied the file to my desktop with the same name. When I tried to sync with Zoho Writer, it said the file did not exist. While one could get around this in a couple of ways (by always opening a copy from Zoho before saving over the previous copy or by maintaining a different filename on each machine), the workarounds are distasteful to me and overly complex.

The third and final issue is definitely a bug. I uninstalled the plugin after these issues, but the "Open from Zoho" entry in the File menu persists on both machines. I hope you can fix the plugin to perform a clean uninstall.

I LOVE the idea, and I applaud you for working in this direction. It seems like synchronization of online and offline data is the next big thing for web applications. This has been something that has kept me from adopting several online services - I worry too much about being stuck without an internet connection to leave all my data online only.

Cheers,
Joe
