Workflow Rule Limits

We have a workflow rule that sends out a series of e-mails, tasks(lead owner) & letters. Once we hit the limit of 5 timed actions we can't add anymore. What we have done is in the last (5th) action it does a field change in "lead status" to long term. We added a second condition "if lead status = long term" it will begin a series of other timed e-mails. It appears this isn't working.
If this can't work this way what would be the best practice solution.
