Inquiry About Layout Rules for Items Section in Zoho Books/Inventory

Good day,

I am reaching out to inquire if there is any way to implement layout rules for the items section in Zoho Books/Inventory.

Before we proceed, I am aware that item groups could be a potential solution. However, the customer is not inclined to use them due to their specific operational processes.

Here’s the situation:
The customer does not carry physical inventory, as their items are made to order. They have over 500 variations of the same base item, differentiated by attributes such as color, size, and other specifications.

What I am hoping to achieve is a dynamic dropdown field that only appears when a specific field (e.g., category) has a certain value. For example, when creating an invoice, we could select the base item, and an additional dropdown (e.g., for colors) would only appear if relevant. Currently, if I create a dropdown for colors, it appears for all items, which can be confusing and impractical.

Unfortunately, Zoho Books does not support client-side scripting, so I cannot handle this programmatically.

Interestingly, if we were to use products within Zoho CRM, layout rules are supported, and this functionality could be achieved. However, the customer’s operations are tied to Zoho Books/Inventory.

I am hoping that this is feasible within Zoho Books, and I might simply be overlooking a solution. Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and assistance!
