Modbus based devices cannot communicate directly with the Zoho IoT application. They require an intermediary master application (gateway or PC-like device) to collect data from the connected Modbus devices and send it to the cloud application. Edge Lite simplifies this process. When installed on the master device, Edge Lite provides a simple step connection to the Zoho IoT application. Once connected, the necessary configurations that enable communication between the master device and Modbus devices can be sent remotely from the Zoho IoT application.
For example, consider a simple energy management setup involving a gateway device and an energy meter. The gateway runs Edge Lite and connects to the energy meter through the RS485 port.
In the Zoho IoT application, two devices must be added, one representing the gateway and the other representing the Modbus device. The gateway device added in the application generates a set of connection credentials, which should be downloaded and uploaded into the Edge Lite enabled gateway. This establishes a secure connection between the gateway and the Zoho IoT application. Once connected, you can send the required configurations and Modbus registry mappings for the Modbus device from the cloud application. After the configurations are deployed, data collected by the Modbus device will be recognised by the gateway, transmitted in its payload, and stored under the corresponding Modbus device in the Zoho IoT application.
The following section provides a detailed explanation of each step involved in using Edge Lite.
Device Addition
1. Add a device representing the Master Application - Gateway and download the connection credentials. Edge Lite Onboarding
Download and install the Edge Lite for your device and establish connection with the Zoho IoT application. If your device is not listed, reach out to support@zohoiot.com.

Physical Set up
The master application: a supported gateway device or computer (running Windows, Mac or Linux) must be connected to the required modbus device using any of the below listed supported protocols.
Note: For Modbus RTU, the physical connection must be made through an RS485 port. If an RS485 port is unavailable, use a USB to RS485 converter.Modbus Configuration
Send the Port Settings and Modbus Registry Mapping from the Zoho IoT application to the connected gateway.
