File Upload field automatically replaces spaces with underscores – support experience

Hi everyone,

I want to share my recent experience regarding the File Upload field behavior in Zoho Creator and my interaction with the Zoho support team.

When a user uploads a file, the system automatically renames the document by replacing spaces in the filename with underscores.
Example: Investment Document.pdf becomes Investment_Document.pdf.

For our process, the original filename is important for compliance, reconciliation with external systems, and user clarity. Because of this, I contacted support to check whether the behavior could be controlled or avoided.

I was asked to join a remote session via Zoho Assist, which I did. The meeting lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes and included members of the support team as well as Level 3 developers. After the entire troubleshooting exercise, I was finally informed that this is default product behavior and cannot be changed.

What disappointed me is that if this is a known and standard behavior, the same information could have been shared at the beginning of the interaction. It would have saved a considerable amount of time for everyone involved.

I’m posting here to ask:

  • Were others aware that filenames are always modified this way?

  • Has anyone found a workaround to preserve the original filename?

  • Can this be considered for a future enhancement?

I would appreciate hearing how others are handling this requirement.
