Tips and Tricks #25: Format multiple objects simultaneously using Show

Hi Everyone,

Want to save time when editing slides with multiple stacked elements? Grouping objects together in Show allows you to combine two or more elements into a single unit so that you can move them around and manage them easily.

For instance, let's consider a shape with some text inside. If you want to move them together, you may do so by first shifting the shape and then the text. However, this takes time and may affect their alignment.

In order to move them in one shot without any hassle, you can group them together. Now, when you move them, they move together as a single unit without losing their alignment or positioning. You can also group multiple objects together to rotate, flip, resize, arrange, or move them together as though they were a single object. Regardless of whatever formatting you apply to the objects, grouping them makes the work easy and quick.

In Show, you can group objects on slides to:
  • Control their attributes simultaneously, such as adding a fill or an effect
  • Select and work on a single object in the group. You can select the group and then click the item to select it
  • Add a new group on top of an existing group to create complex graphics. (For example, you can group a book with a pen. Then group this group together with a lamp. After ungrouping the overall group, the book with the pen will remain grouped and the lamp will be separate)
  • Adjust positioning of multiple objects similarly and keep them neatly aligned

Here's how to group slide shapes, texts, pictures, or images with Show's mobile app:
  1. Open the slide with multiple shapes that you want to group.
  2. Long press a shape to enable the selection feature and select the shape.
  3. Tap other shapes in the slide to select them.
  4. Click Format, then Shape, and select Group to group the selected shapes.
Here's how to group slide shapes, texts, pictures, or images with Show's web app:
  1. Open the slide with multiple shapes that you want to group.
  2. Press Command or Shift to enable the selection feature and select the shape. The selection feature is enabled and the shape is selected.
  3. Tap other shapes in the slide to select them.
  4. Click Format, then Shape, and select Group to group the selected shapes.

Now, if you click and drag the group, every object in the group will move as one. Manipulate and edit  multiple objects in one shot using contextual panel.

Note: The Change Shape function does not work for grouped shapes.

Sometimes, you may want to rearrange and move select items in a group while leaving behind the rest. This can be done easily when the items are ungrouped. You can then regroup them to form a new group, if required.

You can ungroup the unit and work on objects individually using Ungroup in Show.
