Link multiple documents, headings and more—the many ways to use links in Writer.
Apart from inserting links to specific webpages, you can also use links in Writer to navigate to other Writer documents, specific pages of a document, a comment, a particular part of a document or even headings.
Here's a quick rundown of the different linking options in Writer:
Link to a different Writer document
Writer makes it easy to link information from one document to another. To do this, select the document name from the Recent Documents list or insert the document URL directly, and click Apply.
Link to specific place in a document
Use the
bookmarks option
to take your readers a specific section or paragraph in a document. Once inserted, a small bookmark icon will appear next to the reference point. Copy this bookmark link and pass it on to help your readers navigate directly to the specific part of your document.
Link to a heading
The insert link option can also be used to navigate users to a particular heading in you document. To do this, make sure you format your heading as a heading paragraph style (
Heading 1
to
Heading 6
). All headings will be automatically added to the
Headings
drop-down in the insert link menu.
Now to add a navigation link for your heading, all you have to do is to choose it from the headings list and click Apply.
Additionally, you can also generate a URL for your headings. To do this, right click on the heading and click on Get Link.
Link to a particular page
Apart from using bookmark, you can also direct your readers to a specific part of your document by generating links for particular pages. To do this, add
/pages/<page number>
after the document link in the address bar.
Link to a comment
Add more context to your discussions. Take your collaborators to the particular comment you're referring to by generating links of a comment in a document.
Create clickable images
Images in your Writer document can be made clickable using the insert link option. To set up image links:
Right click on the image.
-
Click on the more option icon (☰)
> Insert > Link.
Enter the URL and click Apply.
These images, when exported as PDF, will appear clickable as well.
Link to a specific document version
Refer to a particular version of a document by generating a version link. To do this, go to Version History, click on the more options button next to a particular version and select Get Link.
