Topics are used to categorize your contacts according to their preferences, so that you can send them the right emails. You can configure multiple topics according to your requirements using the
Topics feature in Zoho Campaigns.
After configuring the topics, you need to associate your contacts with the suitable topics. In this document, we'll cover how to associate contacts with the configured topics in the different modules of Zoho Campaigns.
Your contacts will be mapped with the default topic "Marketing", unless you've configured multiple topics. Hence, when you create contacts, you won't be able to see the various options of associating topics, listed below in this help document.
Only when you create at least another topic, you'll be able to use the Assign Topics option or associate topic when creating a new contact manually.

Click to see more FAQs related to Topic managementYou can assign topics to contacts that have already been added to Zoho Campaigns. You can manually select contacts and associate topics to them. You can also associate topics to contacts present in a list or a segment.
- From the Navigation Toolbar to the left, click Contacts.

- Click All Contacts.

- Ensure that you're in the Marketing Contacts view, as you can associate topics to contacts whose subscription type is Marketing.
- Select the necessary contacts using the checkbox present to the left of each contact.
- Click Assign Topics under More Actions.

- Select the topics to be associated with the selected contacts and click Save.

- From the Navigation Toolbar to the left, click Contacts and select Manage Lists.

- Mouse over the list you wish to edit.
Click the More icon at the top-right corner, then click Assign Topics.
- A pop-up will appear where you can choose topics.
- Click the Save button to confirm.

Note:
You can also assign topics to a list after you enter the list.
- Click the list for which you want to associate topics.

- Click the More button at the top-right corner and click Assign Topics.
You can associate contacts with a topic while you are manually adding your contacts into Zoho Campaigns.
- From the Navigation Toolbar to the left, click Contacts and select All Contacts.
- Click the Add New button at the top-right corner, and click Multiple Contacts from the drop-down menu.

- Enter the basic details required in the given fields. If you're going to add a single contact, then enter the details for that contact alone.
- You can also assign Lists, Subscription Type. Only when the subscription type of the contact is Marketing, you'll be able to associate topics to it.

- Associate contacts with the relevant topics.

- Choose the Lawful basis for communication. This option will appear if you've enabled GDPR compliance under Settings -> General -> Compliance settings.
- Click to enable the contact consent related checkbox. Click Add.
You can associate contacts with a topic while you are importing them into Zoho Campaigns.
- From the Navigation Toolbar to the left, click Contacts and click All Contacts.

- Click the Add New button at the top-right corner, and click Import from the drop-down menu..

- In the screen that appears, click Select File as you need to choose a file for importing the contacts.

- You can choose the import file either from your computer or from online services like Google Drive, Zoho WorkDrive. The file format can be .csv or excel file.

Next step is to choose the Subscription Type. Only when the subscription type of the contact is Marketing, you'll be able to associate topics to it.
- Associate your contacts with necessary topics. This step is applicable only if you've created other topics in addition to the default topic (Marketing).
- Choose the Lawful basis for communication. This option will appear if you've enabled GDPR compliance under Settings -> General -> Compliance settings.
- Tick to enable the contact consent related checkbox. Click Save.
- After this, the list selection and field mapping sections remain. For further reading on how to import contacts, you can refer this help document.
You can associate contacts with topics when you're importing contacts using Zoho CRM sync. Select the topic to be associated when you're setting up the sync.
The below steps are provided with the assumption that you've already integrated Zoho CRM with Zoho Campaigns. If you've not yet integrated, you can make use of
this help document to do it.
To associate Zoho CRM's contacts with a topic before they sync to Zoho Campaigns:
- From the Navigation Toolbar to the left, click Contacts and select Sync Services.

- Find Zoho CRM and click New Sync.

- Click Add New Sync button at the top-right corner.

- In the next page, select the module and view for the sync.
- Select Marketing for Subscription Type. Only then, you'll be able to associate topics to the contacts from Zoho CRM.
- Choose the necessary topics and proceed with the sync setup and field mapping to complete the sync.

Similar to Zoho CRM sync, you can associate contacts with topics when you are importing them from different sync services available in Zoho Campaigns. Select the topic to be associated when you are setting up the sync.

You can associate your signup form with a topic. Contacts added through that signup form will be associated with that topic.
To associate a signup form with a topic:
You can assign topics to contacts in a workflow using the Subscription Management component. This could be essential as email campaigns will only be sent to contacts associated with a topic. If there are contacts that are not associated to any topic in your workflow, they might get skipped from the send email components of the workflow.
To dissociate contacts from topics, follow these steps:
- From the Navigation Toolbar to the left, click Contacts and select All Contacts.
- Click the contact and click View All Details.

- Under Topic association history, delete the topic you want to dissociate from the selected contact.

- In the popup that appears, click the Disassociate button.
You can't bulk dissociate contacts from topics.
