WhatsApp template category update: March '23

Effective April 1st, Meta will reduce the number of available WhatsApp template categories to three. Meta will start migration on March 27th, and all your existing template messages will be reviewed and re-categorized.

NEW: Supported template categories

Previously, WhatsApp offered 14 template categories. But with the latest Meta update, the existing 14 categories will be condensed into the following three:

   •    Marketing: Send promotional offers and product announcements to increase customer awareness.
   •    Authentication: Send one-time passwords/codes to help customers access their accounts securely.
   •    Utility: Send transactional updates, order statuses, and critical alerts to customers.

What is a message template?

A WhatsApp Message Template is a pre-approved, customizable message sent to opted-in customers. To start using message templates, you must first submit your messages to Meta for approval. Click here to read more on how to create message templates.

Note: A message template is essential to start a business-initiated conversation.

Message template prerequisites

• A message template must be approved before it can be used to initiate a conversation. Learn more.
• You can only start a business-initiated conversation if a customer has opted in to receive messages from your business. Learn more.
