What is a bounce?
Bounces occur when sent emails cannot be delivered. Typically, the email server will send you an error message detailing the reason for the email bounce. There are two types of email bounce:
- Hard bounce—A hard bounce indicates that there is a permanent delivery failure. Here are few reasons for a hard bounce:
- Recipient email address does not exist.
- Domain name does not exist.
- Typos render the email address invalid. (For example, gnail.com instead of gmail.com)
- Recipient's email server has blocked delivery.
- The email address is inactive or expired.
- Soft bounce—A soft bounce is just a temporary delivery failure that may be due to the following reasons:
- Recipient's mailbox is full
- Technical issues in the receiving email server
You can follow these steps to avoid bounces:
- Use the double opt-in subscription method.
- Send emails to your contacts regularly to keep them engaged.
- Keep your mailing list clean by identifying inactive/unresponsive contacts and bring them back to the active state by sending win-back campaigns.
