The kanban board is a canvas on which your work items can be tracked under the various stages of progress until their completion. This system is used to observe the progress of tasks in your project. It is a visually appealing tool due to its simple and easy-to-understand representation of data. It practically resembles a physical board that is divided into columns of tasks. You can move the tasks across the board based on their progress. Kanban is a used agile tool that helps your agile teams to collaborate and move ahead.
In Zoho Sprints, the board is divided into columns that represent a particular status of the work item or a process that is being undertaken in relation to that work item. For example, you can have columns like Yet to start, Development in progress, Waiting for review, Reviewed, Waiting for approval, Approved, and Completed. Each of these denote a particular phase or status within the lifecycle of the item. They serve as indicators of progress and provide you with information on how far the item has gone.

Default status
Zoho Sprints, with its easy-to-use interface, provides three default status options that are common across business verticals.
To do
All work items that are yet to be started are placed in this status. Usually, the users move the work items to this status during the sprint plan meeting because that's when the team picks items from the backlog.
In progress
All work items that started are placed in this status. Ideally, users move their work items to this status after the first daily status meeting.
Done
All work items that are completed are moved to this status. All work items in the sprint should eventually be moved to this status for the sprint to be completed.
Custom status
Every business has unique requirements, and their project process can involve a variety of stages. To accommodate these requirements, the kanban board comes with custom status option where you can add more status based on your preference.

Create status on the board
To create new status:
- Go to the kanban board.
- Click the ellipsis icon inline with the status. The more actions dropdown will appear.
- Click Create new status. The Create Custom Status window will appear.
- Define new status name.
- Specify status type.
- Define WIP limits.
- Click Create. The new status will be added to your board.
Swimlane
Swimlane on board provides a filtered and reorganized structure to the work items on your board. It allows you to group the items on the board along with their status using specific parameters. There are different types of swimlanes. Click here to know all about swimlanes.
