Custom Functions In People

Custom Functions In People

I'm trying to create a customer function in People where I get the below result:

An employees certificate (e.g. first aid) is due to expire, 1 month before hand both them and their manager get an email advising them to rebook the course. 

I have created a form called certificates that I can link to, but after reading the help articles 'Custom Functions', 'Workflow' and 'Your Zoho People can now become tailor-made with Custom Functions' I have no idea how to set this up. 

Even getting so far as editing the params, it is not clear to me what a method argument is and how I can relay this to the certificate expiry (as per the image below), I haven't been able to get past this step. 

Can any one provide advice or point me in the direction of where I can get more of a basic step by step guide?
