Methods to configure DNS records in Zoho Domains during transfer

When transferring your domain to Zoho Domains, you can choose from the following methods to configure your DNS records:

1. Upload DNS Zone File

You are required to export and import the DNS Zone File during the transfer. This allows Zoho to copy and serve your existing DNS settings after the transfer is complete.

If you have access to your DNS zone file from your current registrar:

  1. Export the DNS zone file from your existing registrar.
    Supported Formats:
    .JSON, .CSV, .ZONE, and .TXT

  2. Upload it directly into Zoho Domains during the domain transfer process.

Once your domain transfer is complete, Zoho Domains will create a Nameserver and begin serving your DNS records based on the uploaded file.

Notes

NOTE: The DNS records will only become effective if your domain is pointed to our default nameservers. If you are using custom nameservers, the records will not be applied.

InfoTIP: Refer to your registrar’s help pages for steps on how to export the DNS zone file, or contact their support for assistance.

2. Auto Fetch DNS Records

The Auto Fetch feature in Zoho Domains is an enhanced service we offer to simplify DNS setup. However, it may not be suitable for domains with a large or complex set of DNS records. It is the responsibility of the domain owner to review carefully and ensure that all required records are correctly fetched and added.

If you are unable to obtain your DNS zone file from previous domain registrar:
  1. Zoho Domains will attempt to fetch your current DNS configuration automatically.

  2. You’ll have the option to review and confirm the fetched DNS data.

NotesNOTE: In some cases, complex DNS records may not be fetched accurately. If this happens, you may need to upload the zone file manually or update the DNS records after the transfer is complete.

3. Retain Current DNS

If your domain is currently using a third-party DNS provider (like Cloudflare or GoDaddy) and you prefer to continue using their service, Zoho Domains allows you to retain that setup. In this case, Zoho will disable its own nameservers, and your DNS records will remain active with your existing provider.

4. Add DNS Records Manually

This option comes in handy when your current registrar does not provide the DNS zone file needed to update your DNS records. Zoho Domains allows you to manually add the DNS records before the transfer is complete. We will automatically begin serving the uploaded DNS records on successful transfer.
Steps to add DNS:

1. Once the transfer is initiated, select the option to add DNS records manually.

2. Add the required records manually and save the changes.

3. After the domain transfer is complete, Zoho Domains will begin serving the DNS records from our side.

Notes

NOTE: Before choosing this option, ensure that your current (losing) registrar will continue to support DNS services after the domain transfer. Nameservers in Zoho Domains can be updated anytime later.

AlertPlease note that during both '1. DNS zone file import' and '2. Auto Fetch', users will not be able to manage DNS records until the domain transfer is fully completed.

Once the transfer is complete, you can manage your DNS records by navigating to:
https://domains.zoho.com → Manage → Manage DNS → DNS → Manage Records.
