An important update regarding your account security

Hello everyone, 

Greetings from Zoho Mail team.

This announcement is to create an awareness to all our Zoho Mail users to ensure they have updated their operating systems (Win/Mac Os) and e-mail clients to the latest SSL/TLS version and this was done a few months ago to ensure that our users will have sufficient time to make the necessary updates & upgrades. We have now extended the timeline to Dec'31st 2020.  

To start with what is an EMail Client - "Email Clients" are supposed to be standalone clients like Microsoft Outlook on Win & Mac OS, Thunderbird on Win & Mac OS, Apple Mail, Windows Mail, etc... and these clients use secure protocols while making a connection with our Zoho server via POP/IMAP & SMTP protocols for incoming and outgoing email reception. In order to overcome the vulnerabilities exposed to the older versions of TLS/SSL protocols, we recommend users to have the latest version of TLS by upgrading to v1.2 or higher. 

What will happen if you do not upgrade: Users need not worry that their Zoho Mail account will be inaccessible if they fail to update the recommendations, we can assure you that your Zoho Mail account will remain active and accessible always via web-mail. 

However, we have users who might be using the older version of (Windows & Mac) OS which are still working with weaker ciphers and less secure TLS v1.0 & v1.1, and such platform will not have any update options from their OEM as the version of OS is now deprecated long back. For those users, we will support their Email clients with dedicated hostnames for POP/IMAP and SMTP which will continue to accept connections.

How to perform the update: 

Windows OS/Outlook: Users who are still with the older versions of Windows (XP & lower) it is recommended that you upgrade the operating system to the latest version. To know the version of TLS supported in the existing OS, refer to this page. 

Users who have Win 7,8 & 10, please refer to this knowledge base article from Microsoft and update the TLS version to the latest. This will by default upgrade the Outlook's TLS version.

Mac UsersUpdate the operating system to OS X Sierra, or 10.12. High Sierra seems to have the best support. Refer the steps here to update. 

TLS v1.2 Supported browsers: Users who do not use any e-mail client application and manage Zoho Mail via a web browser then please verify the supported browser details (https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/clients.html

To verify the current SSL/TLS version of your browser: https://www.howsmyssl.com/

Users with a large user base can perform the upgrade with the help of your system administrators. The above-mentioned articles are references published by the product manufacturers. We highly recommend you to get in touch with the product experts (IT Admins or Microsoft Product support) and make the necessary changes.


Additional Pointers to be noted: 
  • You need not upgrade your Zoho Mail subscription or account to achieve the above recommendation. 
  • Settings and configuration might differ from one user's environment to another, we have shared the generalized guidance to upgrade. 
  • Windows XP will not support TLS 1.2 and you will be required to update to Windows 7, 8, or 10.
  • Mac OS X version 10.9 and later is already compatible with TLS v1.2. No browser updates are required as long as they are up to date
  • If you do not want to upgrade then you need to replace the existing (pop/imap & smtp) hostname with the suffix *old.zoho.com/.eu/.in/.com.au and continue with the existing clients. 
  • While performing the above step, IMAP clients alone will be undergoing a full re sync with our server as it is a protocol behavior when you rename the IMAP server host name.
  • Since it is an IMAP protocol, email syncing will be up-to-date, and there won't be any data loss.
  • An organization that uses any legacy or 3rd party mail sending application other than the above-mentioned Email clients, we recommend the admins/users to check with the respective product support if the application will be compatible with the latest Windows OS and then initiate the upgrade accordingly. 
  • Users who are managing only via online (web-browsers), you need to upgrade to the latest for effective accessing of Zoho Mail.
