Combining Fields

I'm a newbie who isn't that techy oriented who has managed to get tied in knots.

I am trying to create a leaderboard for our equestrian club.

Here's how our system works. We have

1. one rider who may have

2. several horses that he or she

3. rides in several different classes - (see bottom of page for an example of points accumulated during one event.)

From this we then

1. Assign points to each horse/rider combination for the classes they rode in and

2. Keep a running total for the year for

for each class,
for overall high points scorer for each rider and
for overall high points for each horse.

At the end of the year we award prizes for Overall Champion Horse, Overall Champion Rider, Winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd) for each Class (and we separate out Snr/Jnr - least of my problems!)

I've managed to get myself very confused about how to set the fields and forms up and am hoping for a bit of guidance.

I started off by setting up forms for each of

Rider - fields are Member #, Rider First Name, Rider Last Name, Rider All Name (a function combining first & last name), Junior/Senior

Horse - fields = horses name & lookup of Rider Name (need to make this relationship as the same name could be used for two different horses and unfortunately the horses don't always have unique numbers like member numbers). And to further complicate I have to keep horses and riders separate as sometimes horses get sold to another rider during the season.

Event - fields = date and event name

Class - fields = Event, height, points this round, and here's where I'm stuck - firstly how do I get a drop down box that shows a specific horse and rider combination (obviously I've set the structure up wrong somehow) and that then runs off and puts those points next to them together and individually.

Then how do I get the points entered to calculate a running total for the year and display it next to the

Riders Name
Horses name and
In the class show the horse/rider combination points.

Any help would be appreciated as I've been at this for a couple of days and I think all I've managed to do is totally confuse myself on whether I use a script a lookup a function or give up and go back to an excel spreadsheet :((
