Detecting department availability from JavaScript

Hi,

We are using a custom button to invoke chat.

I have a need to set current department and detect department availability from Javascript - when a customer signs into a portal, their local support department will be assigned to them, and the color and wording on the chat icon will dynamically change depending on the department chat availability.

I am having great difficulty finding this option in the JavaScript API - some guidance would be greatly appreciated.
