Unique Identifier Number

Hello - 

We're trying to substitute our intranet which generates proposal ID numbers numerically in our required format. Is there a way to mirror this when creating a new deal that will automatically generate a unique ID number? 

Any assistance on this would be much appreciated. Let me know if I can provide more detail.
