Workspaces

So far I love the workspaces........
When I add files or folders to my workspace, it looks like these files are still in their original location.  So if anyone in the workspace make a change to the file that is in the workspace, will it also be reflected on the original file?
I would just hate to have to versions of one file on my docs or even worse, have to remember where I got the original file from in order to copy the latest version back to the original location
 
Is there a way to just LINK from workspace to a file somewhere else to make sure I have the latest version?
What is the best practice for doing something like this?
