Let's take a look at a few examples:
Wordy sentences are often confusing to read. Consider using direct words without changing the meaning of your sentence. Zia detects such phrases in your document and suggests shorter alternatives. For example, "a number of" is a wordy phrase, which can be replaced with "many". Avoid using hedges, empty phrases, tautological phrases, and redundant acronyms in your writing.
Writing in Active Voice is generally better, because it's more direct and cuts down on the number of words used. Zia automatically lists the passive sentences used in your document. You can consider changing these sentences to improve the quality of your content.
Using fewer adverbs is advisable to avoid redundancy and to make your writing direct. For example, "John said loudly" can be written as "John shouted", which is very direct and reduces the word count.
Zia scans your document and rates the total number of adverbs used. You can consider replacing redundant adverbs to improve the quality of your content.
Clichés are phrases used so often that they are no longer effective or interesting. Open the Zia panel in your Writer document to check the number of clichés used and update your content accordingly.
Archaic words are usually used in old-fashioned novels or in history that are no longer used in writing since they have lost a particular meaning in current usage. Zia automatically detects these outdated words and gives suggestions to change accordingly.
Inclusive writing includes gender-biased language towards a particular sex or a social gender that one writes unintentionally.
Few examples are shown below:
Gender noun | Gender-neurtral noun |
Mankind | Humanity, People, Human beings |
Freshman | First-year student |
Policeman | Police officer |
Chairman | Chairperson |
Zia highlights these gender-specific words in your document with their equivalent gender-neutral words. This helps writers to avoid misrepresenting an individual's gender, age, or race when writing.
Zia hightlights if a word is too complex to read and gives you suggestions to change it to a more understandable word.
Zia identifies split infinitives, conjunctions used in the beginning of a sentence or unclear pronoun used in your writing and suggests to rephrase such sentences. Though these sentences are not grammatically incorrect, you can consider rephrasing them to improve the writing quality.
When a sentence starts with a conjunction (and, but, because, while, until, although, or if), Zia suggests to rephrase the sentence.
A split infinitive is an adverb or adverbial phrase, that is placed between the "to" and the plain form of a "verb". There’s nothing grammatically wrong with split infinitives. However, rephrasing it makes your writing clear and formal.
Unclear pronoun will make your sentences confusing and vague.
For example, consider the following sentence.
“Both John and Peter loved his car”.
From the above sentence, we cannot tell whose car they both loved. Zia identifies such phrases in your document and suggests to rephrase them.
You can check and update the writing quality parameters from the Zia panel.
