How to Create Textbox Questions in Zoho Survey | Online Help Guide

Textbox

Zoho Survey supports the following textbox question types.
  1. Short Answer
  2. Long Answer
  3. Number
  4. Email
  5. Full Name
  6. Text Field (Heading/Description)

Short Answer

Short Answer question type allows your respondents to type in a short text or a combination of text and numbers. You can set the character limit and the textbox size while crafting the question. The maximum response size is limited to 255 characters, which can be changed to any number less than 255. The maximum size you can set for the textbox is 40 characters. 

Short answer question sample:


To add a short answer question in your survey:

  1. Click Short Answer in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. Also, you can change the question type by clicking the dropdown next to the question type in the question editor. However, the choices for change are related to the question type you have selected. For example, if you selected short answer question type, you can only change it to its variants available in the list. You can select an option from the dropdown. 

  2. In the Question box, type your question. 
    1. If you want to mark the question mandatory, select the Make this question mandatory checkbox.
    2. If you want to make changes to the default Error message text that displays, edit the content in the textbox.
    3. If you want to pipe in custom variables or variables from previous questions and customize the follow up questions, click Insert Variable right above the Question box, and select the variable you want to use from the list. Read more on Piping.
  3. To learn what else you can do with the question, click Advanced options. You can perform the following actions:
    1. In the Textbox size dropdown list, select the size of the textbox you want to use.
    2. Select Validation if you would like to validate your responses using a predefined or custom regular expression that matches the answer.

      1. Select a validation type from the list of options available in the Validate dropdown list. Depending on the validation type you select, a predefined regular expression will be displayed in the RegEx field.
      2. Click the Condition dropdown list to select Matches or Contains.
      3. If you select Length, you'll need to enter the minimum and maximum character limits in theText must be between fields respectively.
      4. If you select Custom, you'll need to enter a custom regular expression to match the answer.
      5. You can edit the default error message in the Error message field, or use the text displayed.
    3. The autofill or prepopulate answer feature allows you to prepopulate single variable survey responses automatically before sending it to respondents. To prepopulate answers for a known respondent, select Prepopulate answer
    4. Question hint is used to add hints to your question and help your respondents get a clear idea on what your questions are all about. This feature is optional and is available only for certain types of questions.

  4. Switch to the Display Logic tab to add a logic condition to the question.
  5. Click Save.
  6. To discard the changes, click Cancel.

Long Answer 

Long Answer question type allows your respondents to write long, open-ended answers in a textbox. You can set the character limit and the textbox size in the advanced options section. The maximum response size is limited to 5000 characters, which can be changed to any number less than 5000. The response textbox size can be formatted to allow up to 9 lines with 100 characters for each line.

To add a long answer question in your survey:

  1. Click Long Answer in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. Also, you can change the question type by clicking the dropdown next to the question type in the question editor. However, the choices for change are related to the question type you have selected. For example, if you selected multiple lines question type, you can only change it to its variants available in the list. You can select an option from the dropdown.   
  2. In the Question box, type your question.  
  3. If you want to mark the question mandatory, select the Make this question mandatory checkbox. 
  4. If you want to make changes to the default Error message text that displays, edit the content in the textbox. 
  5. If you want to pipe in custom variables or variables from previous questions and customize the follow up questions, click Insert Variable right above the Question box, and select the variable you want to use from the list. Read more on Piping
  6. To know what more you can do with the question, click Advanced options. You can perform the following actions: 
    1. In the Textbox size dropdown lists, select the number of lines and the number of characters you want in each line. 
    2. In the Text must be between boxes provided, specify the minimum and maximum character limits. 
    3. The autofill or prepopulate answer feature allows you to prepopulate single variable survey responses automatically before sending it to respondents. To prepopulate answers for a known respondent, select Prepopulate answer
    4. Question hint is used to add hints to your question and help your respondents get a clear idea on what your questions are all about. This feature is optional and is available only for certain types of questions.

  7. Switch to the Display Logic tab to add a logic condition to the question.
  8. To save the changes, click Save
  9. To discard the changes, click Cancel.

Number

Number question type allows the survey respondents to type in numeric responses.

To add a number question in your survey:

  1. Click Number in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. Also, you can change the question type by clicking the dropdown next to the question type in the question editor. However, the choices for change are related to the question type you have selected. For example, if you selected numeric textbox question type, you can only change it to its variants available in the list. You can select an option from the dropdown.  
  2. In the Question box, type your question.  
    1. If you want to mark the question mandatory, select the Make this question mandatory checkbox. 
    2. If you want to make changes to the default Error message text that displays, edit the content in the textbox. Decimal values will be accepted. 
    3. If you want to pipe in custom variables or variables from previous questions and customize the follow up questions, click Insert Variable right above the Question box, and select the variable you want to use from the list. Read more on Piping
  3. To learn what else you can do with the question, click Advanced options. You can perform the following actions: 
    1. In the Textbox size dropdown list, select the number of characters you want to use in the textbox. 
    2. In the Minimum value and Maximum value boxes, specify the minimum and maximum character limits. 
    3. Select Allow decimal value if you want to allow decimal values in the answer.
    4. The autofill or prepopulate answer feature allows you to prepopulate single variable survey responses automatically before sending it to respondents. To prepopulate answers for a known respondent, select Prepopulate answer
    5. Question hint is used to add hints to your question and help your respondents get a clear idea on what your questions are all about. This feature is optional and is available only for certain types of questions.

  4. Switch to the Display Logic tab to add a logic condition to the question.
  5. Click Save
  6. To discard the changes, click Cancel.  

To limit the values in a number textbox question:

  1. Click Number question. 
  2. Click Advanced options
  3. In the Minimum value and Maximum value boxes, specify the minimum and maximum character limits. 


To adjust the size of textbox type questions:

  1. Click the question you want to resize (Short answer, Long Answer, or Number). 
  2. Click Advanced options in the question. 
  3. In the Textbox size dropdown list, select the size of the textbox you want to use. 

Email

Email question type allows the respondent to type in an email address as the response in the textbox.

To add an email question in my survey:

  1. Click Email in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. Also, you can change the question type by clicking the dropdown next to the question type in the question editor. However, the choices for change are related to the question type you have selected. For example, if you selected Email textbox question type, you can only change it to its variants available in the list. You can select an option from the dropdown.

Full Name

Full Name question type can be used to collect information about the first and last name of your respondents.

To add a full name question in your survey:

  1. Click Full Name in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder.  
  2. If you want to rename the labels, type in the new labels in the First Name and Last Name Question label boxes respectively.  
  3. If you want to mark the boxes mandatory, select the Make this question mandatory checkbox. 
  4. If you want to make changes to the default Error message text that displays, edit the content in the text box. 
  5. In the Text must be between boxes provided, specify the minimum and maximum character limits. 
  6. Switch to the Display Logic tab to add a logic condition to the question.
  7. To save the changes, click Save
  8. To discard the changes, click Cancel.

To set the character limit and the textbox size:

You can set the character limit and the textbox size (short answer, long answer, full name, or contact information) while crafting the question. The maximum response size is limited to 255 characters, which can be changed to any number less than 255. The maximum size you can set for the text box is 40 characters.

Heading/Description 

Heading/Description question type can be used for including comments or explanations in your survey.

To add a heading/description question in my survey:

  1. Click Heading/Description in the question type listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. 
  2. In the Heading box, type in the heading text.  
  3. If you want to pipe in custom variables or variables from previous questions and customize the follow up questions, click Insert Variable right above the Heading box, and select the variable you want to use from the list. Read more on Piping
  4. In the Description box, type in the descriptive content. You can perform the following actions here:

    2. To make your text appear in boldface, click  Create online surveys
    3. To italicize the text, click Create online surveys
    4. To underline the text, click Create online surveys
    5. To adjust the font size of the text, click Create online surveys
    6. To set a background color for the text, click Create online surveys
    7. To set a color for the text, click Create online surveys
    8. To insert a link, click Create online surveys
    9. To unlink a hyperlink, click Create online surveys
    10. To upload an image, click Create online surveys. You can select the images by using either of the following ways: 
      1. From the image gallery - You can drag and drop the image in the box, or click to upload images.  

      2. From URL - In the Image URL box, type in or copy/paste the web link of the image. 

      3. To confirm the image selection, click Insert
      4. To make changes to the image selection, click Cancel
    11. To align the text, click Create online surveys , and select the alignment you want to use.  
  5. Switch to the Display Logic tab to add a logic condition to the question.
  6. To save the changes, click Save
  7. To discard the changes, click Cancel.
