Overview
If you’re working on an academic paper, research document, or any content involving mathematical expressions, Zoho Writer’s LaTeX-based Equation Editor helps you create and insert professional-quality equations with ease.
You can use the LaTeX Editor to:
- Write and edit complex mathematical formulas using LaTeX syntax.
- Browse through Symbols and Functions for quick insertion.
- Copy from Sample Syntax for common expressions.
- Preview your equation in real time.
- Regenerate an equation if you’re not satisfied with the initial result.
- View and reuse your recently used symbols for consistency.
This tool is designed to make adding equations effortless, especially for users in STEM, education, and research fields who regularly work with mathematical content.
Steps
1. Open the Equation Editor
- Click the hamburger menu to open the left panel.
- Go to the Insert tab.
Under the Pictures & Tables header, click Equation. The LaTeX Editor window will open.
2. Explore Symbols and Functions
- In the Symbols/Functions section (on the left panel), you can choose from categories such as:
- Greek Lowercase / Greek Uppercase
- Operators
- Sets
- Comparison I / II
- Arrows
- Functions
- Others
- You can also click Show recently used symbols to quickly access symbols you’ve used before.
3. Use Sample Syntax
- Click Sample Syntax (next to the LaTeX Syntax field) to explore examples of commonly used equations.
- These serve as ready-made templates for standard formulas such as fractions, exponents, square roots, and integrals.
- Copy the sample you need and modify it as required.
Example:
\frac{a+b}{c+d} or
x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}
4. Preview and Adjust
- As you type, the Preview pane on the right automatically displays a real-time rendering of your equation.
- Use the zoom controls (+/-) in the Preview section to view it more clearly.
- If the equation doesn’t appear as expected, click Regenerate to refresh the rendering.
5. Insert the Equation
- Once you’re satisfied with the equation in the preview, click Insert.
- The equation will be added to your document as an image at the cursor’s position.
You can format the equation's appearance using standard formatting options in the LaTeX Editor to highlight it or match your document’s style.
7. Edit an Existing Equation
- Right-click the inserted equation.
- From the menu, select Modify Equation.
- The LaTeX Editor will reopen, allowing you to update the syntax, replace symbols, or regenerate the preview.
- Click Insert to apply and update the changes in your document.
8. Remove an inserted equation
- Right-click the inserted equation.
- Choose Remove Equation from the menu to delete it from your document.
- Alternatively, you can place the cursor next to the equation and press Backspace or Delete on your keyboard.
Additional Note
You can import a .docx file that already contains equations into Zoho Writer. However, Writer currently does not support editing or removing equations imported from .docx files, as they are treated as static images.
Troubleshooting
1. Error/Symptom: Edit or Remove Equation Option Not Visible
Possible cause: If you’ve imported a .docx file that already contains equations, the Modify Equation and Remove Equation options may not appear.
Recommended solution: To make the equations editable, recreate the equation using Insert > Equation in Writer’s LaTeX Editor.
2. Error/Symptom: Equation doesn’t render correctly
Recommended solution:
- Double-check your LaTeX syntax for errors like missing braces {} or backslashes \.
- Use the Preview area to confirm before inserting.
- Click Regenerate to refresh if symbols appear misaligned or incomplete.
3. Error/Symptom: Missing symbols or functions
Recommended solution:
- Browse through the Symbols/Functions categories carefully, some symbols might be grouped under alternate headings (e.g., “Comparison II” or “Others”).
- You can also manually type the correct LaTeX command in the LaTeX Syntax box.
