To apply a new style to the selected content, do the following:
- Select the text you need to format and do the required formatting. (For example, you want to change the color and font size of the text.)
- Now, click More
> Format. - In the Format tab, click the Styles drop-down menu.The updated styles will be highlighted in the preview.
- Click on the edited style, and choose Save as new.

- In the Create New Style pop-up, enter the name and description to your style.
- Click Save. The created style will be saved in your style library.

Update existing style
- Select the text you need to format.
- Click More
> Format. - In the Format tab, click the Styles drop-down menu.The updated styles will be highlighted in the preview.
- Click on the edited style, and choose Update Style. The default style will be updated with the latest changes.

Update style to match selection
If you have used a built-in style in Writer, made some changes to it, and now you want the formatting to be updated to your entire document, you can use the Update style to match selection option. For example, you have modified the default style for Heading 2 in your document. Now choose the Update to match selection option for all the Heading 2 styles. So, whenever you use Heading 2 , the updated style will be automatically applied in your document overall.
To update style to match selection,
- Click More
> Format. - In the Format tab, click the Styles drop-down menu.The updated styles will be highlighted in the preview.
- Next to the name of each style, you will see an arrow. Click the arrow next to the style you'd like to update. A drawer will open to the right of the style.
- Choose Update <style> to match selection. The formatting for that particular style will be modified in your document overall.

Reset to default style
If you have made changes in a built-in style in Writer, and now you want to reset it to the default formatting, you can use the Reset to default option.
To reset a style,
- Select the text you want to update and do the required formatting. (For example, you updated the color and font size of a heading style). The style will be highlighted with a star mark.
- Click on the modified style and choose Reset to <style> default. The default style will be applied.

Using the style library
You can customize styles in your document and save in your style library with unique name and description. Whenever you work on a document, you can apply the required style sets from your style library directly.
Also rename/delete these custom style sets when they're no longer necessary.
Collaborators can view the styles applied by the document owner. They can also save these styles in their personal style library and use it in other documents, if required.
To add styles from library,
- Click More
> Format tab > Style. - Click the drop-down arrow under Style and click Add from style library. The list of styles that you created earlier will be displayed here.
- Choose the required style and click Use to apply the style to your document.

To rename styles,
- Click More
> Format tab > Style. - Click the drop-down arrow under Style and click Add from style library. The list of styles that you created earlier will be displayed here.
- Click on any style that you want to rename and choose the Rename style option.

- Change the style name and click Rename in the Rename style popup.
To delete custom styles,
- Click More
> Format tab > Style. - Click the drop-down arrow under Style and click Add from style library. The list of styles that you created earlier will be displayed here.
- Choose any style that you want to delete and click the Delete style option. Note that, you can delete only the style sets that you've created in your account. Default styles cannot be deleted.
Next Paragraph Style
If you are looking to switch between different paragraph styles while writing, the Next paragraph Style aids you to do so without having you do it manually every time. You can define what style should appear when you move from one paragraph to another.
For instance, if you want the 'Title' style to be always followed by 'Heading 1', you would select 'Heading 1' style as the next paragraph style for 'Title' in the document. Once you hit the Enter or Return key after setting a new style, the new style will automatically be enabled for the next paragraph, as shown in the below image.

To set next paragraph style,
- In the Format tab, under Style, click Set Next Paragraph Style.

- Choose the style you want to be applied after the current style when you press Enter.

To set next paragraph style for a saved design,
- Navigate to Design tab.
- Click on 'Manage Design' and in the selected style, click More > Set Next Paragraph Style.
