Introducing Contract Settings & Backdated Contracts in Zoho Contracts
We are rolling out updates that give you more control over how contracts are created and managed in Zoho Contracts. From defining default workflows with Contract Settings to aligning agreements with real timelines using Backdated Contracts, these enhancements are built to simplify your day-to-day contract operations.
Contract Settings
Contract Settings allow administrators to define default workflows and configurations for contract creation, collaboration, signatures, and more. Think of it as the control center where you set the ground rules — so your team does not have to configure the same options every time they create a contract. Contract Settings are available at two levels:
General Level Contract Settings: These apply across all contracts in your organization. Set it once, and it works everywhere — providing a consistent experience for your entire team. For more information, refer to General Level Contract Settings.
Contract Type Level Contract Settings: Need different default settings, rules, and workflows for different contract types? Contract type-level settings let you override the general settings for specific contract types. For example, your NDAs might require a different signing configuration than your MSAs. For more information, refer to Contract Type Level Contract Settings.
Backdated Contracts
Zoho Contracts now allows admins to enable backdating, so contracts can be created with an effective date set in the past. This is useful in scenarios where parties have already agreed to terms — verbally or over email — and have begun operating under that understanding, but the formal paperwork was delayed due to administrative bottlenecks. Backdating simply brings the documentation in line with operational reality, accurately reflecting when the business relationship actually began. Note: Using backdated contracts can carry legal and ethical implications. Backdating contracts may be considered fraudulent and could be illegal in many jurisdictions. It is essential to consult with legal counsel to ensure that any such agreement is in compliance with the law and to avoid potential legal repercussions.
