Upcoming updates - April, 2020

Dear App Creators,


This is an unprecedented time we're living through, and we at Zoho wish you all safety and good health. Let's all continue to do our personal best to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Remember, it's in our hands—so let's wash 'em extra carefully! :)


That said, our work-from-home efforts are keeping the updates coming. By the end of April, 2020, we'll be rolling out the following features and updates:

  • Hide/show seconds in reports
  • Freezing the subform header
  • Layout designer for quick view
  • Shared analytics
  • JavaScript support

Hide/show seconds in reports

Availability: Creator 5 and accounts using New UI


Along with the Time field, we introduced the Show seconds field property:



This allows you to show or hide the seconds part in the time picker.


Once this update is rolled out, this property will also dictate if the seconds part—in the Time and Date-Time fields—will be shown or hidden in reports.

Freezing the subform header

Availability: Creator 5 and accounts using New UI


With this update, the subform header will be frozen when it's accessed in a form. This will benefit users as they're using your subforms.


Please note that the subform header will not be frozen when the main form is accessed within a page.

Layout designer for quick view

Availability: Creator 5

With this update, you'll be able to create custom card-like quick view layouts for the list reports in your apps. Here's a summary of what you'll experience:
  • You'll see a new section named Custom Layout under Layout:


  • The layout you create will be available across the three form factors (web, phone, and tablet). Layout properties such as Records per row will apply only to web right now; they'll automatically be optimized when they're accessed from smartphones and tablet.
  • The layout designer will be similar to what you're using to customize the panels in your pages:

Shared analytics

Availability: Creator 5 accounts that own Premium and above subscriptions from our latest pricing plan


This will allow your users to create new reports for forms they have access to, and share them with other users. Here's a summary of what your end users will experience:
  • Users you permit to Create new report(s) will see the Reports section when they access your app.

  • Users can create the following report types for forms they have access to: list, pivot table, and pivot chart.

  • Users can share the reports they create with other users. Actions that other users can perform in these reports will be subject to their permissions in your app.

Please note that this report creation will be allowed only when your app is accessed from a web browser.

JavaScript support

Availability: Creator 5 accounts that own Premium and above subscriptions from our latest pricing plan


We're introducing
widgets to enable you to add the power of JavaScript to your Creator apps:
  • A widget is an independent and dynamic app hosted on a Zoho server. It can consist of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, font, and text files.
  • Widget creation will be in your app's Settings, and you can add them to the pages in that app.
  • Widgets can communicate with your Creator app via our JS SDK, which provides JS wrappers for our REST APIs.

The following will be supported:

  • HTML tags, up to HTML 5, are supported.
  • Inline, embedded, and external CSS from your own or third-party frameworks.
  • Third-party JS libraries and frameworks. You can be add them to the project that you upload to Creator, or can link to them via external static or CDN servers.
  • Embedding third-party cloud apps and their UI components via their JS SDK.
  • Communicating with third-party services such as Google, Facebook, and Twilio, via their JS client SDK. This will require white-listing the required service, which will be done on our end, at your request.

The following will not be allowed:

  • HTTP and Ajax calls via third-party libraries.

Other aspects:

  • Widgets you add to your pages will be accessible from mobile devices—read native mobile apps and PWA for iOS and Android. Though take note that your widgets will have to be built with the required responsiveness to fit all three form factors—web, phone, and tablet.

Limits:

  • Each file that's part of your widget cannot exceed 5 MB.
  • 50 widgets per Zoho account.
  • Supported file formats: txt, md, xml, dre, jpg, jpeg, png, gif, bmp, svg, css, js, html, json, woff, woff2, ttf, eot, mp3, mp4, mp5, webm.
  • Widgets will not be part of backup-restore, DS export, and duplication of applications. For widgets included in pages, a shell structure will be created in the DS/backup, but you'll have to reupload your widget's ZIP file. (This limit will be overcome in the following updates.)
